white nights

We have been having very cold weather, but little snow, and lots of sun. And moon! Doestoevsky called one of his stories “White nights” in reference to the long summer nights in St. Petersberg. It applies equally well to nights lit by the full moon, in the wild, where there’s no competing light.

Even in the summer when the birch and poplar are full of leaves, it’s so bright outside under a full moon that you can just about read outdoors. In winter, as at our last full moon, it’s even brighter, with the moonlight reflecting off the snow. The shadows of the spruce and fir trees stretch long and thin across the white snow, and the light itself is white.
