spring on its way
Posted in Uncategorized by Marilyn at 1:16 pm | No Comments »

Moderately cold weather continues, and we still have only about six or eight inches of snow. This time of year we should have at least a foot and a half! The farmers are worried about it being excessively dry this spring with so little run-off – although we had such an incredibly wet fall, we can hope that will make up for it.

Finally we are getting some stretches of sunny days! Now that I am no longer rising to an alarm clock, I find that I tend to wake up at dawn. Not so bad at this time of year, but I am wondering if I’ll be rising at 4:30 am in the summer! I will hope that if I do, it will be just to enjoy the morning chorus of birdsong, and then drift off to sleep again … Not that I would mind getting up at dawn, it’s the having to go to sleep so early in the evening that concerns me!

My hibiscus, after years of little or no bloom, due primarily to a bad infestation of spider mites, plus the need to be repotted, is full of buds of all sizes. It has already produced two blossom, and I could swear they are a more intense orange than they used to be. This morning I counted 15 more buds, suggesting this will be the most blossomfull season since I rescued it (from a friend who regarded plants as interior decoration rather than as living things).

My Christmas cactus, which finished blooming before Christmas, is blossoming again, just a few flowers this time.

Most amazingly, I looked under the fabric coverings I put on my empty pots in the sun room (to keep the cat out), and three of the pepper plants have sprouted leaves from the cut-off stem of last season’s plants. One of them even has a flower bud on it!

Obviously, despite the cold, the lengthening days and intensifying sun are showing that spring is on its way.
