And Saturday morning we awoke to see a dusting of snow on the ground. It all melted in a few hours, but it was nice to see! It did do in the remaining brown-eyed susans. We still have flowers left, on the big old sedum I inherited when we bought the house – no wonder its other name is “live forever”!

We saw a pair of whisky jacks (Gray jays or Canada jays) on the weekend – checking out the buffet table at their winter resort. They like suet, but we won’t be putting out feeders until there’s snowcover or we know the bears have gone to bed, whichever comes first, and we won’t be putting out the suet feeder until it’s staying below freezing in the daytime – otherwise the balcony just gets too, well, aromatic. And that would definitely attract bears!

The other day one of our chickadees figured out how the little seed feeder works – there he was, hanging upside down and pecking at the seed hole! I am putting out a handful of sunflower seeds on the railing from time to time, although I’m quite sure there’s lots of natural food out there in the woods still!

Last week we finally saw real snow – just snow showers and flurries on and off, Thursday and Friday, and it didn’t stick on the ground.
